My title of today's blog is simply put! Fence posts, or fence post. What comes to my mind when I see the words fence posts?? We'll the truth is that it takes me back 40 yrs., and I see endless miles of fence posts on the wind swept prairies of southern Alberta, Canada where we spend our first forty years. The same fence lines that are there in 2023 were put into place in the fifties and still look very good. We were just in Alberta to lay my late mother to rest, and because we're involved in manufacturing fence posts and pressure treating them on a daily basis, we now notice them everywhere we go. The fence lines where we used to run our range cows in Alberta still look the same as they did for the last fifty years. I'm sure the posts are dry and brittle, but they're still doing a excellent job.

So what's the secret of the long life of these fence posts, that no bugs have consumed them, or weather rotted them away?? Surely the dry climate and low rain fall has a lot to do with it. So this tells me that any where on the prairies, if you have a properly treated fence post, you should not have to ever change them in your life time. What I'm saying is: a fence line on the prairies is a one time cost for a persons life time. Period

Now when we get fence builders telling us that the place where they have been buying their fence posts at, the posts they have, needed to be replaced in three years, I start scratching my head, and thinking, there's no way that the fence posts could have been properly treated! If you pressure treat a southern yellow pine fence post with C.C.A to a retention rate of .40%, and press the chemical into the post properly, it should last a mans life time, even in very wet conditions.

So my friend, do your home work before you buy your fence posts, and educate yourself in the whole treating process, because it's not rocket science. I'd much rather pay a little extra for a load of fence posts, and know that they're properly pressure-treated, than to buy the cheapest posts where the folks skimped on their chemicals just to save a buck!!

As always, have a wonderful day and God Bless!

Sincerely,
Sam Hofer
